ARMENIAN CULTURE DAY IN ROME

On March 9 at the Vallicelliana Library of Rome Day of Armenian Culture was held. The event was organized under the patronage of the Embassy of the Republic of Armenia in Italy and in cooperation with the Vallicelliana Library, Cultural Association "Albatros" and "Colombia” travel agency.

The Ambassador of the Republic of Armenia to Italy H.E. Ms. Victoria Bagdassarian, the Undersecretary of the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage, Activities and Tourism Antimo Cesaro, Director of the Library and moderator of the conference Paola Paesano delivered their welcoming speeches.

In her remarks Ambassador Bagdassarian briefly presented the history of the Armenian people and its rich cultural heritage, the results achieved during the years of independence of Armenia, the centuries-old presence of the Armenians in Italy and their contribution to the development of economic and cultural life of the Italian Republic.

While speaking of the relations between the two countries the Ambassador mentioned 25th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Armenia and Italy will be marked that on March 17, emphasizing the thousands years old history of ties and cooperation between the two peoples.

The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Culture also highly valued the level of cultural cooperation between Armenia and Italy. Dr. Cesaro referred to the forthcoming session of the Italian-Armenian Intergovernmental Commission and to the project of creation of the Regional Centre for the cultural heritage restoration in Armenia with the support of the Italian Government, describing them as important factors contributing to the development of cooperation between the two countries. The Undersecretary spoke also about the role and the importance of the culture in preservation of the historical memory of the peoples and about the cultural heritage created by the Armenian people.

The sociologists of the La Sapienza University of Rome Maria Immacolata Macioti, professor of the Armenology Dipartment of the University of Bologna Anna Sirinian, journalist Claudia Sugliano, writer and critic of the Rome National Library Magda Vigilante, director of the cultural Assosiation “Albatros” Agostino Bagnato and jounalist Sonya Orfalian were among the speakers.

The speakers talked about different aspects of the Armenian rich culture: literature, music, architecture, manuscripts, Armenian language and alphabet, historical and cultural monuments. Then they made reference to the peculiarities of the Armenian cuisine, to the activity of the Armenian poet Hrand Nazariantz who found refuge in Italy at the beginning of the 20th century, as well as to the modern Armenian culture.

The report on the creation and the activities of Matenadaran of Ara Khzmalyan, the researcher of Mashtots Institute of Ancient Manuscripts (Matenadaran) of Yerevan was read at the conference.

In the afternoon the documentary of Agostino Bagnato entitled "Armenia among us" was screened which presented the rich cultural heritage of Armenia with its landscapes and tourist attractions.

The exhibition was followed by the classical and folk music of the Armenian composers performed by Italian and Armenian musicians, the poesy of Hrant Nazaryants was read.
After the theatrical performance of a piece from "The pigeon frightened" by Raffaele Aufiero, the day dedicated to Armenian culture was concluded with an exhibition of contemporary art of Armenian artists.
