CONFERENCE DEDICATED TO THE 25TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE INDEPENDENCE OF THE REPUBLIC OF ARMENIA AND THE ESTABLISHMENT OF DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS BETWEEN ARMENIA AND ITALY

On May 16 on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Armenia and the establishment of diplomatic relations between Armenia and Italy, a conference entitled "Armenia 25 years: challenges and prospects" took place in "Zuccari" Hall of Palazzo "Giustiniani" of the Senate of the Italian Republic. The event was organized by the Embassy of the Republic of Armenia to Italy in collaboration with the Italian-Armenian Parliamentary Friendship Group.

The conference was attended by the representatives of the Italian political figures, diplomats, representatives of the Armenian community in Italy as well as the Media. The Chairman of the Committee on European Union policies of the Senate Senator Vannino Chiti chaired the conference.

In her welcoming speech Ambassador Bagdassarian briefly presented the two thousand years common history, recalling also the secular presence of the Armenian community in Italy which represents the basis for the development of today's diplomatic relations. The Ambassador referred to the significant developments in bilateral relations over the last 25 years, to the first session of the Italian-Armenian Intergovernmental Commission on June 7 and to the various bilateral cooperation sectors.

The Undersecretary of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Senator Benedetto Della Vedova, the President of the Hygiene and Health Committee of the Senate and Co-Chair of Italian-Armenian Parliamentary Friendship Group Senator Emilia Grazia De Biasi, the President of the Culture Committee of the Chamber of Deputies and Co-Chair of Italian-Armenian Parliamentary Friendship Group Flavia Piccoli Nardelli, the President of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly President Paolo Alli, the Member of the Foreign Affairs Committee Emma Fattorini, the President of Armenia's Defense, National Security and Internal Affairs Committee of the Parliamentary Assembly and of Armenian-Italian Parliamentary Friendship Group Koryun Nahapetyan, the Emeritus President of the Union of Armenians of Italy Prof. Baykar Sivazliyan and other representatives of The Senate and the Chamber of Deputies of Italy were among the speakers.

The speakers referred to the historical ties and secular relations between Italy and Armenia, the achievements of the Republic of Armenia over the last 25 years, the outcomes and prospects of bilateral relations and the process of peaceful settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, the inter-parliamentary relations and the challenges that Armenia will face.
The conference ended with a vin d'honneur offered by the Embassy.
